SWINDON ADVOCACY MOVEMENT
INDEPENDENT CARE ACT ADVOCACY
There is a law called the ‘Care Act‘ and it aims to put people and their carers in control of their care and support. Some people find making decisions about their care and health needs difficult. These people can have an advocate under the Care Act.
INDEPENDENT MENTAL CAPACITY ADVOCACY (IMCA)
Mental capacity means being able to make your own decisions at a time when that decision is needed. There is a law called the ‘Mental Capacity Act’ and it protects people who can not make decisions about certain things for themselves.
INDEPENDANT MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCACY (IMHA)
There is a law called the ‘Mental Health Act’, it states that you can be sent to hospital (detained), even when you do not want to be there.You have lots of rights if you are detained , one of them is the right to receive help from an independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA).
