The Swindon Advocacy Movement, affectionately referred to as SAM is an independent charity who provides free advocacy for individuals with a learning disability in Swindon.

We support people through periods of change in their lives; those who cannot make themselves heard and enable people to get the services and help they need to improve the quality of their lives.

We help people to understand their rights and get what they are entitled to.

We help people who are on their own, receiving a service that is not right for them.

Give people support and encouragement to speak up for themselves.

Find an advocate they can get on well with, a person that understands them and knows what they need.

Our advocates are paid staff and volunteers who provide short term (issue based) and long term advocacy for people who may need help with issues involving benefits, housing, health, education, employment or access to services and leisure activities.

S.A.M also offers a specialist service supporting parents with a learning disability/difficulty through child protection and court proceedings.

S.A.M has introduced a Transitions Advocacy Service for young people aged 16-25 who are facing choices at a time of major change in their lives.

S.A.M has a team of information workers who help us to provide accessible information that is easy to read.

The information workers have recently worked with Thamesdown Transport to improve the local bus services and provide training for their drivers on the needs of people with learning disabilities that use their services.

S.A.M offers training to clients, volunteers and businesses and is currently running a 'Speak up Workshop', 'Volunteer Training' and 'Learning Disability Awareness Training'.  We have a team of trainers, two of which have a learning disability and can give true to life scenarios which really makes this training hit home.
